The Boxser Diversity Initiative’s 2024-25 Building Bridges Discussion Series

Through stories of courage, resilience, and activism highlighted in the Discussion Series, we hope to promote empathy and inspire attendees to work toward making our community a better place. The legacies of civil rights giants like the late Congressman John Lewis and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. serve as powerful examples of the impact committed individuals can have in advancing social change. The struggle for LGBTQI+ and disability rights expands the conversation, demonstrating the enduring ripple effects of the civil rights movement on other causes. Finally, the series illuminates the rich history of African American contributions to the development of Sarasota and the broader region, celebrating local history and acknowledging ongoing struggles and achievements here at home.

The Building Bridges Discussion Series complements and supports BDI’s newest initiative, “Bending the Arc,” which offers local 10th and 11th grade students an in-depth study of the civil rights movement in preparation for a weeklong trip to experience relevant sites in Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham, Alabama. By including our cohort of 20-30 high school students in these broader community conversations throughout the fall and spring, the series bridges generational gaps, allowing younger and older community members to learn from each other and create a shared commitment to equity and justice. This intergenerational connection is vital for building cohesion and empathy and strengthening our social infrastructure.
